Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen both played outstanding innings, helping South Africa reach a total of 357/4 in their World Cup match against New Zealand in Pune. This was the eighth consecutive time South Africa managed to score over 300 runs when batting first this year.

Although South Africa lost the toss, their initial batting was met with a strong spell from New Zealand’s Trent Boult, resulting in the dismissal of Temba Bavuma. While the South African captain seemed at ease facing Matt Henry, scoring a couple of impressive drives and a six, he couldn’t quite master a cover drive against Boult, ultimately giving a catch to slip.

It was then that van der Dussen joined de Kock in the middle, and the duo went on to build a remarkable partnership of 200 runs for the second wicket, which turned out to be the highest partnership for South Africa against New Zealand in ODIs for any wicket. De Kock achieved his fourth hundred in this World Cup and his 21st overall in ODIs, although his innings wasn’t the smoothest, surviving a tough dropped catch by Glenn Phillips at backward point when he was on 12. Nonetheless, he managed to reach his century off 103 balls and seemed increasingly in control of his game.

Meanwhile, van der Dussen encountered his fair share of luck, being dropped twice during the same Jimmy Neesham over when he was on 68 and 72. Despite this, he persevered and eventually reached his hundred off 101 balls. He was eventually dismissed by Tim Southee on 133 in the 18th over, but his 118-ball knock significantly boosted South Africa’s total score.

Thanks to de Kock and van der Dussen’s strong performance, South Africa scored a remarkable 190 runs in the second PowerPlay (11-40 overs), setting the stage for some big hitting in the final overs. This was duly delivered by van der Dussen himself, along with David Miller, who scored a quick 53 off 30 balls, including 2 fours and 4 sixes. However, he was caught brilliantly by Daryl Mitchell in the deep during the final over.

South Africa managed to score an additional 119 runs in the last ten overs, with the absence of Matt Henry making matters even more challenging for New Zealand. The fast bowler sustained a right hamstring injury during his second spell and was ruled out from returning to bowl for the rest of the match.
