Jordan Hermann’s Heroics Seal Thrilling Victory for Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Jordan Hermann smashed an unbeaten 62-ball 106 but it needed Ottniel Baartman to defend 15 runs off the final over for defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape to clinch their first win of the 2024 SA20 season. MI Cape Town produced a thrilling response to the visitors’ score of 202 and fell just four runs short.

Aiden Markram’s decision to bat on a flat Newlands surface was vindicated by a 138-run opening stand between Hermann and Dawid Malan. Both batters hit out at near identical rates, launching a double-barrelled assault on the MICT bowlers. At the end of the powerplay, Sunrisers had 53 on the board. At the halfway stage of the innings, it was 96/0 with Hermann racing away to a 33-ball half-century.

While Malan wasn’t comprehensively outpaced in the partnership by his younger partner, it was the 22-run 12th over bowled by Liam Livingstone that turbocharged the 22-year-old’s innings. Hermann hit three sixes and a four and raced away to 75, opening up a 20+ gap to Malan at the other end.

Eventually, the partnership was ended by captain Kieron Pollard, who ended a bowling hiatus to bring himself on and found success with a cutter that Malan miscued straight back to the bowler. Another off-cutter in the following over brought Pollard the wicket of Markram, opening a window of a comeback. It proved to be as Hermann lost steam in pursuit of the hundred, managing to score just 16 runs off his final 12 balls with no boundaries to show in this period.

The momentum achieved by denying Sunrisers a final flourish translated into MICT’s chase as openers Ryan Rickleton and Rassie van der Dussen plundered 64 runs in the powerplay. That soon became 105/0 in 9.2 overs as Sunrisers began floundering on the field with ‘keeper Tristan Stubbs dropping Rickelton twice in two overs. It needed Baartman to end the century stand when he had Rickelton holing out to long-on for 58.

The fightback was well and truly on when van der Dussen fell 10 balls later. MICT’s imperious chase suddenly began wobbling and they lost four wickets for 16 runs. And still, all the early hitting had kept the asking rate in control and a partnership between Sam Curran and Pollard brought them back to needing 26 runs off the final two overs.

Pollard’s dismissal to the first ball of the penultimate over turned the pendulum only for Curran to swing it right back in his team’s favour by ending that over with a six. When Connor Esterhuizen swung a full toss over wide long-on for six, the equation was down to a very gettable 9 from 5. But Baartman found great execution in his yorkers and gave away just five runs from the remaining deliveries to pull off a thrilling win.
