Back in July, Stirling took over as the stand-in captain for the white-ball games when Balbirnie stepped down. Now, he’s been given the job permanently. He’s 33 and a pretty aggressive opening batsman. So far, he’s led the team in 22 matches across the two formats – 6 ODIs and 16 T20Is.

Stirling said, “Playing for Ireland has always been a big deal for me. Getting the nod as the official white-ball captain is an honor I don’t want to take lightly. I’ve had a blast working with Heinrich and the coaches over the last few months as the temporary skipper. But we’ve got some big competitions coming up, and it’s time to get down to business.”

He also added, “I mentioned not long ago that one-day cricket is my favorite. Watching the current World Cup has fired me up even more to make sure we’re in the mix for the 2027 event. I know the team shares that same drive, so we’re gearing up for the next series in December.”

Head coach Heinrich Malan praised the decision, saying Stirling’s experience and know-how make him a valuable asset. Stirling has played a whopping 376 games for Ireland in different formats, just 13 shy of Kevin O’Brien’s record. He’s also the highest run-scorer for Ireland, with 11,756 runs under his belt.

Malan said, “Working closely with Paul these past months has shown me how much of an asset he is. He’s got a ton of experience from his time with Ireland, franchise cricket, and even county cricket. Fans see his talent on the field, but his leadership and communication skills with the squad are just as impressive. He’s all about cricket, and his passion for Irish cricket is clear for all to see. It’s amazing to think he’s been in international cricket for 15 years and still has more to give to the team and Irish cricket as a whole.
