Glenn Maxwell is reported to have escaped any major injuries, but he’s currently undergoing concussion protocols, which means he won’t be able to play in the match on Saturday (November 4). However, the good news is that he is expected to recover in time for the next game against Afghanistan and for the rest of the tournament.

According to head coach Andrew McDonald, the incident took place on Monday at around 6.30 pm, right after the Australian team’s “golf day”. While returning from the clubhouse to the team bus, Maxwell had a mishap and fell off the back of a cart, resulting in a minor concussion. Due to this, he will have to follow the concussion protocols for a while and unfortunately won’t be able to participate in the England game.

Maxwell won’t be replaced for now and is expected to follow a six to eight days concussion protocol, ruling him out of the upcoming match against England. However, the team anticipates his return for the subsequent game against Afghanistan and the remainder of the tournament.

The incident occurred after the team’s golf day when the players lingered for speeches at a clubhouse, a little further from the main area. This resulted in some players and staff, including Maxwell, resorting to using golf carts to reach the team bus. Due to a shortage of carts, some players hopped onto the back, covering a short distance of approximately 300 meters. Unfortunately, Maxwell lost his grip during the ride, leading to the concussion.

Coach McDonald clarified that there was no inappropriate behavior involved, emphasizing it was an unfortunate accident. Maxwell was seen walking around the team hotel on Wednesday and is recovering well, despite sustaining a minor gash on his forehead.

Maxwell is expected to engage in light training later on Wednesday. Coach McDonald praised Maxwell for his honesty about his post-accident condition. He reiterated the team’s commitment to respecting concussion protocols and ensuring the players’ well-being.

Maxwell had previously experienced a significant leg injury, which has influenced his training sessions during the World Cup, aimed at maximizing his strength and mobility.

With Maxwell out, it’s likely that Marnus Labuschagne will retain his spot, with Travis Head expected to play a more substantial role in bowling alongside his off-spin, aiming to slow down the pace of the game.

Although this incident marks the second golf-related injury for the Australian team in the past year and a half, McDonald emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance for the players and clarified that there were no plans to cancel golf activities. He assured that Maxwell is in good spirits despite being unavailable for the upcoming game, emphasizing the importance of maintaining balance within the team.
