Sri Lanka Cricket Ban Lifted: ICC Resolves Governance Issues.

International Cricket Council Remove Sri Lanka Cricket Ban:

On Sunday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that they had lifted the ban on Sri Lanka Cricket, effective immediately. The ban was imposed on November 10 due to what the International Cricket Council described as a “serious breach of its obligations as a Member,” particularly regarding the requirement for autonomous management and preventing government interference in cricket governance in Sri-Lanka.

The decision to lift the ban followed a detailed 112-page report by Sri-Lanka’s auditor general, which accused the cricket board of poor governance, corruption, and financial mismanagement. This led to the removal of the Sri Lankan board, led by President Shammi Silva, during the 2023 World Cup. Despite a temporary reinstatement after an appeal, the board was sacked again shortly after, only to resume its duties once more.

Amidst the turmoil within the Sri Lankan cricket board, the International cricket board convened on November 21 and made the decision to relocate the Under-19 World Cup 2024 from Sri-Lanka to South Africa, where it was originally scheduled to take place.

In a statement released on Sunday, the International cricket board expressed satisfaction that Sri-Lanka Cricket is no longer in violation of its membership obligations, thus justifying the lifting of the ban.

“The ICC Board has been monitoring the situation since the suspension and are now satisfied that SLC are no longer in breach of membership obligations,” International cricket stated in a release on Sunday.
