Dhawan was born in Delhi to Sunaina and Mahendra Pal Dhawan on December 5, 1985

Dhawan began his professional cricket career at 14 when he played for Delhi Under-16 in the 1999 Vijay Merchant Trophy

He was subsequently picked for India Under-17 and quickly made into the Delhi Under-19 team at 15

His major career milestone arrived in 2004 when he played in the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh and emerged as the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 505 runs.
