Naveen-ul-Haq hit with a 20-month ban by (ILT20).

In a surprising turn of events, Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq has been hit with a 20-month ban from the International League T20 (ILT20) due to a breach of contract. Naveen, known for his skills on the field, played a crucial role for the Sharjah Warriors in nine matches earlier this year.

The issue arose when Naveen was found guilty of violating his Player Agreement with the Sharjah Warriors, the team that signed him for Season 1 of the tournament. Despite being offered an extension for another year by the Warriors, Naveen chose not to sign the retention notice for Season 2.

Representing the Sharjah Warriors in the inaugural edition of the ILT20 in 2023, Naveen showcased his talent by claiming 11 wickets in nine matches at an average of 24.36. Despite his on-field success, the refusal to sign the retention notice led to a contractual dispute.

David White, ILT20 CEO, stated , “We do not take pride in making this announcement but all parties are expected to comply with their contractual commitments and recognize that non-compliance can cause damage to the other party. Unfortunately, Naveen-ul-Haq failed to honour his contractual obligations with the Sharjah Warriors and as such the league had no option but to impose this 20-month ban on him.

“The disciplinary proceedings against Naveen were conducted in a transparent manner and both parties involved were given opportunities to prepare and present their submissions.”

The Sharjah Warriors, keen on resolving the issue, approached the ILT20 for assistance. In an effort to mediate the disagreement, competition authorities appointed an independent third-party mediator to facilitate talks between Naveen and the franchise. Unfortunately, these attempts proved futile, and a resolution couldn’t be reached.

With no agreement in sight, the ILT20’s three-member disciplinary committee, consisting of ILT20 CEO David White, head of security and anti-corruption Col. Azam, and Emirates Cricket Board member Zayed Abbas, took charge of the situation. They heard both parties separately, carefully examining the evidence and statements provided.

After thorough consideration, the disciplinary committee decided to impose a 20-month ban on Naveen-ul-Haq. This decision reflects the seriousness of the breach of contract and serves as a reminder of the consequences when contractual obligations are not met in professional cricket.

As Naveen grapples with the repercussions of this ban, questions arise about the impact on his cricketing career and future engagements in T20 cricket. The incident highlights the challenges players face in navigating contractual commitments and emphasizes the importance of honoring agreements in the world of professional sports.
