In a bid to revamp their coaching staff and turn around their fortunes, Women’s Premier League franchise Gujarat Giants has announced the appointment of former Australian cricketer Michael Klinger as their head coach for the upcoming 2024 season.

Michael Klinger steps into the role, taking over from Australian cricket legend Rachael Haynes, who led the Giants to a disappointing finish at the bottom of the points table in 2023, with only two wins from eight games.

A prominent figure in the cricketing world, Klinger brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role. Renowned for his success in the Big Bash League (BBL), Klinger recently showcased his coaching prowess by guiding the Sydney Thunder to a commendable fourth position in the Women’s Big Bash League last year.

Joining forces with former Indian captain Mithali Raj, who serves as the mentor and advisor for the Giants, as well as Nooshin Al Khadeer, the team’s bowling coach, Klinger forms part of a dynamic backroom staff committed to driving the team towards success.

 “The Gujarat Giants have a chance to do something special in the Season 2 of the Women’s Premier League,” he said in a statement. “I am eagerly looking forward to working with cricketing legend in Mithali Raj, who has played a transformative role in women’s cricket in India. Together with the Adani Sportsline family, Mithali Raj, and the rest of the team, I hope to take the team to ultimate glory.”

Having previously served as the head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, Klinger is no stranger to the rigors of coaching in elite cricketing competitions. While his tenure with the Renegades saw mixed results, with the team unable to secure higher than a wooden-spoon finish, Klinger is determined to make a positive impact with the Giants.

Taking charge of a team brimming with talent, Klinger inherits a squad that has been further strengthened following last year’s WPL auction. With a roster boasting several superstars, the Giants are poised for a competitive showing in the upcoming season under Klinger’s leadership.
