In a thrilling Marsh One-Day Cup clash between Victoria and South Australia, Victoria’s bid for a spot in the men’s domestic 50-over final was marked by a concerning incident involving Henry Hunt.

While fielding at mid-off, Henry Hunt faced a terrifying moment when he took a powerful strike from Tom Rogers directly to his face. The impact left him with a suspected broken nose and caused significant bleeding. Despite the distressing scene, Hunt managed to walk off the field with assistance to receive urgent medical attention from Cricket Australia’s on-duty doctor, Chris Hasenkam.
The severity of the injury was evident as ground staff had to hastily apply sawdust to the affected area of the outfield. Hunt was promptly sent for scans to assess the extent of the damage.
The incident prompted a swift response from Redbacks coach Jason Gillespie, who rushed down from the coaches’ box to the team dugout to offer support.
Despite the overshadowing of Victoria’s victory by this unfortunate event, the cricketing community rallied behind Henry Hunt, hoping for a swift recovery for the dedicated player.
“He’s gone to hospital,” Gillespie told cricket.com.au after play. “He’s having scans, having all those medical procedures done.
“Chances are his nose will be pretty sore. We’ll just have to wait and see, and (then) assess.
“I was upstairs and as soon as I saw it, I started to run downstairs because that just looked sickening. You could see the concern on the lads’ faces.
“That’s a worry, first and foremost. His health is the absolute priority … hopefully he’ll be okay.”
Rogers, who scored 67 runs off 87 balls, seemed shaken by the unexpected blow from a Lloyd Pope delivery. However, he quickly refocused, and together with Nic Maddinson, who contributed 54 runs off 53 balls, they forged a formidable 103-run opening partnership. This partnership set the stage for Victoria’s thrilling three-wicket victory, putting the drama aside for a remarkable performance on the field.
“I hit it pretty hard,” said Rogers, noting that Hunt was “usually an absolute gun in the field”.
“I don’t know whether he touched it or not. Hopefully he’s okay, he’s a wonderful guy as well.
“Hopefully the scans come back clear for him because he’s got a really bright future as well.
“He was talking and responding and all that sort of stuff. It’s obviously hard to know with concussion because it can come through delayed, but he’s in the right hands now.”
