Finch has been an integral part of the Melbourne Renegades since the league’s inception and served as their captain for nine seasons spanning BBL 2 to BBL 10. Notably, he remained loyal to the Renegades throughout his Big Bash career, not playing for any other team.

As a seasoned opener, Finch led the Melbourne Renegades to their only BBL title win during the 2018-19 season. His final appearance for the Renegades, although not a memorable one as he got out for a three-ball duck against the Melbourne Stars, marked the end of an illustrious cricketing journey. Despite the result, Finch received a standing ovation from the crowd.

Over the course of 107 BBL games, Aaron Finch showcased his batting prowess, accumulating 3,311 runs at an impressive average of 34.85. His remarkable record includes two centuries and 26 half-centuries. Additionally, Finch also contributed with his left-arm spin, securing five wickets during his BBL tenure. The retirement of his jersey symbolizes the Renegades’ deep appreciation for Finch’s significant contributions to the team and the league as a whole.

Melbourne Renegades’s Aaron Finch bids farewell.

As he geared up for his farewell match, Finch took a moment to reflect on his journey with the Melbourne Renegades and expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the opportunities he had been given. In a statement quoted by ESPN Cricinfo, Finch shared his sentiments:

“When you’re no longer captain, I guess that’s taken out of your hands a bit as well because you’re not in selection. It’s been difficult no doubt. It’s been something that I’ve been lucky with throughout my career actually that it hasn’t happened a huge amount of times. But to finish up here at Marvel will be really special as well.”

Reflecting on the Melbourne Renegades’ title-winning campaign in the BBL during his captaincy, Finch added:

“The title win was unbelievable. Especially against the Stars in a game where they well and truly had one hand, almost two hands on the trophy, and to drag it back and win that game was really special.”
