Mohammad Kaif slams Shreyas Iyer’s critics through his “X” handle.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif showed his support for Shreyas Iyer following the star batter’s impressive half-century against Australia in the fifth T20I in Bengaluru on Sunday, December 10.

Kaif thinks there’s been too much unfair criticism of Iyer’s supposed weakness against short-pitched deliveries and believes that when he performs well, he deserves praise. Alongside a picture of Iyer, Mohammad Kaif shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter):

“Shreyas Iyer has been on a phenomenal run lately, and it’s about time we appreciate that. Let’s shift the focus to his strengths instead of always pointing out his weaknesses.”

Bengaluru’s pitch wasn’t easy to bat on, especially with ample grip for the spinners. Despite the challenging conditions, Iyer’s 53 runs off 37 balls showcased why he could have been an underrated contender for the Player of the Match award.

After a prolonged injury break, Iyer made a strong comeback in the 2023 World Cup, scoring a couple of centuries, including one in the semifinal against New Zealand. Surpassing the 500-run mark, he stood as the third-highest run-scorer from his team, trailing behind Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma.

Given the spin-friendly pitches in the West Indies, selectors might be considering Iyer for the upcoming matches, and his recent performances have certainly bolstered his chances. It remains to be seen whether he will be part of the playing XI in all three T20Is against South Africa later this month.
