Despite missing the first four matches of the tournament, the 33-year-old Shami had an outstanding World Cup performance. He emerged as the leading wicket-taker, securing 24 wickets in seven matches with an impressive average of 10.70, including three five-wicket hauls.

According to a report from news agency PTI, Shami’s remarkable achievements came despite his ongoing heel problem. An unnamed former teammate of Shami revealed, “Shami has a chronic left heel issue. A lot of people don’t know that he took injections regularly during the World Cup and played the entire tournament through pain.” The teammate emphasized that as players age, recovering from injuries takes more time.

Interestingly, Shami was not initially part of the playing XI for the first four games, as the team opted for the all-rounder Shardul Thakur. However, an injury to Hardik Pandya during the match against Bangladesh led to a change in plans, and Shami was brought into the playing XI.

Shami’s impactful performance included a notable 5/54 against New Zealand in Dharamsala, and he continued to trouble opponents in subsequent matches, except for the final against Australia.
