Nepal’s prominent leg-spinner, Sandeep Lamichhane, is poised to serve an eight-year jail sentence following a verdict from the Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday, January 10. The decision, delivered by a single bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal, also includes a fine of Rs.3 lakh and an additional compensation payment of Rs.2 lakh to the victim.

The legal proceedings stem from a case filed in September 2022, in which the victim accused Lamichhane of rape that allegedly occurred in August 2021. Following months of trial and investigation, Lamichhane was convicted on December 29, 2023. The sentencing was scheduled for January 10, 2024.
The legal battle witnessed its share of twists, with the initial claim by the victim of being a minor at the time of the incident being dismissed by the court. Lamichhane, who had been arrested upon returning from the 2022 Caribbean Premier League, appealed to the high court to challenge the district court’s order directing him to the Sundhara-based Central Jail.
While the trial and investigation continued, Lamichhane’s movements were restricted, including being flagged from traveling abroad. He was required to inform the authorities in advance if he intended to leave Kathmandu. Despite the legal constraints, the Supreme Court temporarily lifted the restrictions, allowing Lamichhane to resume playing cricket. Consequently, he featured for Nepal and participated in various franchise leagues throughout the year 2023.
