Afghanistan’s spin maestro, Rashid Khan, will unfortunately miss the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), as confirmed by Lahore Qalandars’ Chief Executive. The star leg-spinner recently underwent back surgery and is currently in the recovery phase, leading him to convey his unavailability to the franchise for the 9th edition of the league.

Since making his PSL debut in 2021, the Afghan cricketer has been a standout performer, securing 44 wickets in 28 matches at an impressive average of 15.47, coupled with an economy rate of 6.13. Notably, Rashid Khan played a pivotal role in Lahore Qalandars’ triumph in the 2023 edition, emerging as the leading wicket-taker for the team with 20 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 14.05. This outstanding contribution played a crucial role in the franchise securing their 2nd consecutive title under the leadership of Shaheen Shah Afridi.

In light of Rashid Khan’s absence, Qalandars’ Chief Executive, Atif Rana, released a statement, as reported by Cricket Pakistan.pk:

 “It is upsetting that we have been deprived of Rashid Khan. He is a big name and a match-winner. No one can replace Rashid completely. Efforts will be made to include a good player in the squad in place of Rashid.”

Additionally, with the young leg-spinner also sidelined for the ongoing T20I series against India, head coach Jonathan Trott emphasized that there is no definite timeline for the player’s return. Trott expressed a cautious approach, stating that they do not want to rush him back into action. In his statement quoted by ESPN Cricinfo:

“It is a case of us making sure that we are really careful with his back. He is such an influential player, we have to make sure he is 100 per cent ready and not rush him back from that type of surgery. It is important to give him the right time and he is working extremely hard and he is here with the team.”
