Sanjay Bangar’s Return
In a surprising move within the IPL, Sanjay Bangar has been appointed as the head of cricket development for Punjab Kings. Despite a rocky relationship with the franchise’s promoters in his previous stint, the management now emphasizes a warm welcome for the former Indian cricketer and experienced coach. Ness Wadia, co-owner of Punjab Kings, expressed joy at Bangar’s return, noting it as a “homecoming of sorts” and highlighting unanimous support from all owners.
Bangar had faced issues with one of the owners, Priety Zinta, in the past, but Wadia insisted that his reappointment was a collective decision among the franchise promoters. The decision to bring him back was driven by the appreciation for Bangar’s previous contributions and experience, according to Wadia.
While Bangar was removed after Punjab Kings finished last in the 2016 season, Wadia clarified that it was not an acrimonious parting. He expressed optimism about Bangar’s longer second stint, citing his happiness that Bangar will bring valuable experience to the team, working alongside head coach Trevor Bayliss, captain Shikhar Dhawan, and CEO Satish Menon. Wadia believes that this collaboration will bring structural improvements, making Punjab Kings a formidable force in the coming years.
Wadia recalled Punjab Kings’ best season under Bangar in 2014 when they reached the final, expressing hope that Bangar, along with Bayliss and Dhawan, will lead the team to greater heights. Despite recent struggles, Wadia remains confident in the team’s potential, aiming for a resurgence in the upcoming IPL seasons.
