Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli had a great day against Sri Lanka on Thursday (November 2) as India put up a total of 357/8 after being asked to bat first in Mumbai. Although all three players had opportunities to score centuries at different points during the innings, they couldn’t quite reach the milestone. On the other hand, Dilshan Madushanka from Sri Lanka impressed with a five-wicket haul.

Madushanka made an early breakthrough by getting Rohit Sharma out with a well-executed delivery, catching the Indian skipper off-guard. This rattled the Indian crowd. However, Kohli quickly got into his rhythm and started hitting boundaries in the powerplay. Gill also picked up his pace after a slow start.

Kohli and Gill continued to score well, even forcing the Sri Lankan captain to change the bowlers. They both reached their half-centuries, with Kohli surpassing 400 runs in the tournament. With wickets in hand, the two batsmen decided to accelerate their scoring rate, putting pressure on the Sri Lankan team.

Gill, in particular, hit consecutive sixes and seemed set to reach his century. However, Madushanka returned to the attack and dashed his hopes by taking his wicket for 92. Kohli also fell shortly after for 88, missing the chance to equal Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in the format.

Despite these setbacks, India’s momentum didn’t falter. Shreyas Iyer came in with a positive attitude, hitting three sixes in three overs. Although Sri Lanka managed to take a few quick wickets, Shreyas and Ravindra Jadeja held their ground, denying Sri Lanka any further advantage.

Jadeja played a supporting role as Shreyas continued to dominate the scoring. Shreyas looked promising to reach the century mark, especially when he hit consecutive sixes off Madushanka. However, Madushanka made a strong comeback, deceiving Shreyas with a slow and wide delivery, leading to his dismissal for 82. A couple of boundaries from Jadeja in the penultimate over helped India surpass 350, setting the record for the highest team score in World Cup history without a century.
