The Sports Ministry has told the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to set up a temporary group to oversee the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The newly elected WFI management is currently suspended due to a dispute with wrestlers. In a letter to the IOA chief, the Sports Ministry expressed concerns about the governance and integrity of the WFI, given the influence of its former leaders.

The ministry emphasized the need for immediate corrective measures to maintain good governance in sports organizations. It called on the IOA to arrange for an interim committee to manage WFI affairs, ensuring that wrestlers are not adversely affected, and the principles of good governance are upheld.
The IOA’s temporary panel will handle day-to-day WFI affairs, including athlete selection, participation in international events, and organizing sports competitions. This decision comes after the recent suspension of the newly elected WFI administration led by Sanjay Singh.
The Sports Ministry raised issues about the new WFI body being seemingly under the control of former office bearers, disregarding the Sports Code. It noted that WFI business is operated from premises controlled by former leaders, where allegations of sexual harassment against players are also being investigated in court.
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former WFI chief, stepped aside amid accusations of sexual harassment by top wrestlers, including Sakshi malik. Despite assurances that close associates of Brij Bhushan would not be allowed to contest, Sanjay Singh, his loyalist, won the recent election against Commonwealth Games gold medallist Anita Sheoran, who had the support of protesting wrestlers. The Sports Ministry has intervened to address the ongoing issues and maintain the integrity of wrestling governance in India.
