Sunil Gavaskar Backs Jaiswal And Iyer :

Sunil Gavaskar shared these thoughts during an interview on Star Sports’ Gameplan on Saturday, January 20.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal will easily settle in home conditions. He’s also a left-hander. I think he’ll establish himself completely in the Indian Test team after this series.”

After making a spectacular debut with a score of 171 against the West Indies, Jaiswal faced a bit of a challenge in the recent two-Test series in South Africa, where he managed to accumulate only 50 runs. It wasn’t just him; other notable Indian players like Shubman Gill, captain Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer had varying degrees of success, scoring 74, 60, and 41 runs respectively in the series. Each player had their share of ups and downs during the South Africa tour.

Sunil Gavaskar has expressed support for Shreyas Iyer, affirming his belief that Iyer can recreate the success he achieved in the 2023 ODI World Cup during the upcoming Test series.

“In the World Cup, Shreyas Iyer batted brilliantly in Indian pitches, so I’m hoping he’ll play similarly at No.5 in the Test series. He batted aggressively, was quite watchful at the start and then his stroke-making after reading the pitch was a delight to watch. I hope he’ll replicate that.”

During the 50-over ICC world cup event 2023 , Iyer showcased an impressive performance by scoring 530 runs in 11 innings. He notched up two centuries and three half-centuries during the tournament. In the Test format, specifically in the middle order, Iyer has accumulated 707 runs in 12 matches with an average of 39.28.

This includes one century and five half-centuries, illustrating his proficiency and contributions in the longer format of the game.
