Sunil Gavaskar, the renowned cricket expert, recently shared his insights on the standout performer for the Indian men’s cricket team in 2023, and according to him, Shubman Gill takes the spotlight. Gill’s exceptional batting display in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during the past year caught Gavaskar’s attention. The young talent amassed a staggering 1584 runs in 29 innings, showcasing an impressive average of 63.36 and a brisk strike rate of 105.45.
However, the versatile cricketer experienced a mixed bag in Test matches and T20 Internationals (T20Is), with relatively subdued performances. In Tests, Gill managed to score 258 runs at an average of 28.67, while in T20Is, he accumulated 312 runs at an average of 26.00.

Particularly, he lauded Gill’s unstoppable start in Test cricket, even though there was a slight dip in his performance towards the end of the year.
“Breakout performer, I would imagine would be Shubman Gill for the way he batted throughout the 2023 season in all formats of the game. Test cricket, at the start, he was unstoppable.”
Despite the fluctuations in Test matches, Gavaskar emphasized Gill’s exceptional contributions in the white-ball formats, declaring him the breakout performer for the men’s team in 2023. The cricket expert highlighted Gill’s remarkable performances in ODIs and T20Is, underlining his significant impact on the team.
“Towards the end, he tapered off in Test cricket but the ODI and T20 performances were exceptional. So he would be the breakout performer as far as the men’s team is concerned.”
Beyond international cricket, Shubman Gill’s stellar year extended to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, where he represented the Gujarat Titans. Gill emerged as the highest run-scorer in the tournament, smashing an impressive 890 runs in 17 innings. His outstanding performances with the bat secured him the coveted Orange Cap, awarded to the player with the most runs in the season.
