Sunil Gavaskar believes that Ravi Bishnoi should be India’s go-to wrist-spinner for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA in June. As India gears up for a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, starting with the first game in Mohali on Thursday, January 11, it’s noteworthy that the squad includes both Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav as the two wrist-spinners among the 16-member lineup for the series.
During a conversation on the Star Sports show ‘Game Plan,’ Gavaskar was posed with the decision of selecting between Bishnoi, Kuldeep, and Yuzvendra Chahal as India’s preferred wrist-spinner for the global event. In response, he stated:

“Ravi Bishnoi for me because apart from bowling, he is a very good fielder. He is a better fielder than Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.”
The former Indian captain further emphasized that Bishnoi is not only a skilled bowler but can also handle the bat effectively. Gavaskar pointed out a specific instance during the IPL 2023, where the Lucknow Super Giants spinner, in partnership with Avesh Khan, played a crucial role in guiding their team to victory in an away game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
“He can bat as well, the way he applied his brains and won his side the match with his calmness in the last IPL,” He continued. “I feel he and Avesh Khan had won their side the match against RCB. So Ravi Bishnoi for me.”
Ravi Bishnoi has successfully claimed 34 wickets in 21 T20 International matches, maintaining a commendable economy rate of 7.14. Despite being named the Player of the Series for the five T20Is against Australia at home, he did not get an opportunity to showcase his skills during the recent tour to South Africa.
