In a recent development, Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has made a formal request to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to exclude him from the upcoming central contract list. This decision follows a series of events, including a meeting that ended abruptly due to BCB President Nazmul Hassan’s busy schedule during the general election campaign.

Tamim, the former ODI skipper, had previously hinted that he would determine the course of his international career after discussions with BCB President Nazmul Hassan. The interruption during their previous meeting delayed this decision-making process. Notably, Tamim, who last played for Bangladesh in the three-match home ODI series against New Zealand in September, featured in just one Test and 12 ODIs throughout 2023.
The 34-year-old cricketer opted out of the ICC World Cup, citing disagreements with BCB high-ups and team management. Subsequently, he also did not participate in the home Test series against New Zealand and the ongoing New Zealand tour. However, Tamim clarified last month that he planned to make a competitive cricket comeback through the Bangladesh Premier League, scheduled to commence on January 19.
Jalal Yunus, BCB cricket operations chairman, addressed Tamim’s recent decision, stating, “Tamim said he has his own plan and therefore he requested us not to include him in the central contract list.” Yunus further mentioned that Tamim is expected to meet with the BCB president post the national election to discuss the next steps. Until then, the decision on Tamim’s inclusion in the central contract list remains on hold.
The BCB is set to finalize the central contract list by December 31, and it will be submitted to the BCB president for approval before the deadline. Tamim’s exclusion adds an interesting layer to the contract deliberations, with the veteran batsman taking a proactive approach in shaping his future within the cricketing landscape.
