Tushar Deshpande’s Historic Century in Ranji Trophy 2024.

In a historic match held on Tuesday, February 27 at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai, Tushar Deshpande, along with his teammate Tanush Kotian, etched their names in cricketing annals. Their partnership as the No. 10 and No. 11 batsmen made them the first pair in Ranji Trophy history to score centuries. Their remarkable stand of 232 runs for the last wicket propelled Mumbai to a mammoth total of 569 runs in their second innings against Baroda.

Reflecting on his exceptional performance, Deshpande expressed deep satisfaction at proving his batting mettle despite his unconventional batting position. He shared, “Feeling very satisfied with the knock because I was batting at No. 11 and I was able to do this. I always wanted to prove that I can bat, my father always believed that I can be a very good all-rounder and this innings is for him.”

The 28-year-old cricketer attributed his power hitting to his early days playing rubber-ball cricket. Tushar Deshpande‘s innings of 123 off 129 deliveries, albeit ending just shy of equalling the record for the highest 10th-wicket partnership in Ranji Trophy history, showcased his capability with the bat.

Despite narrowly missing out on the record, Deshpande harbors no regrets about his dismissal, which halted their pursuit of the milestone. He maintained, “The only thing that I had in mind was to play as per the merit of the ball. The ball before (his dismissal) I hit for a six and (on) the ball that I got out, it did not go my way but no grudges that we could not complete the record… another day I might get an opportunity and I will try to do that.”

Tushar Deshpande’s innings not only propelled Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy semi-finals but also stands as a testament to his dedication, talent, and the unwavering belief his father had in him. As he continues his cricketing journey, Deshpande’s century will remain a poignant tribute to his father’s faith and a milestone in his own career.
