His return to India is expected by Saturday.
Virat Kohli faces family emergency
On the other hand, India’s best batsman Virat Kohli had to miss the three-day intra-squad game in Pretoria due to a family emergency. While the details of the emergency remain undisclosed, BCCI sources assure that Kohli will be back in Johannesburg in time for the first Test, scheduled to start at Centurion on December 26. Kohli, who left for Mumbai three days ago, is anticipated to return on Friday, December 22.
Gaikwad‘s absence leaves a void in the opening department for India, and the team management, in consultation with the BCCI, has decided to release him immediately, given the unlikelihood of his recovery before the Test series.
In the ongoing practice game, notable performances have been observed, with Sarfaraz Khan and Abhimanyu Easwaran seizing their opportunities. Skipper Rohit Sharma, along with pace bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur, has displayed impressive form.
With the ODIs concluding and the practice game ending on Friday, the entire Indian contingent is set to regroup in Johannesburg before heading to Centurion for the first Test on December 26. Following the Boxing Day Test, scheduled to end on December 30, the team will move to Cape Town for the second and final Test starting on January 3.
