Former India captain Anil Kumble highlighted a significant aspect of young batsman Shubman Gill’s technique following his early dismissal in the ongoing 1st Test against England in Hyderabad. Gill, who resumed his innings from an overnight score of 14, was caught by England debutant Tom Hartley for 23.
Hartley claimed his maiden Test wicket as Gill’s attempt to attack him resulted in a catch for Ben Duckett at mid-wicket. Kumble, speaking during the lunch break on Day 2, emphasized the need for Gill to improve his ability to rotate strikes, especially when facing spinners.
Kumble drew attention to the exemplary techniques of Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahul Dravid, who consistently batted at no. 3 throughout their careers. He urged Gill to adopt a strategy of playing with soft hands, particularly when dealing with spin bowling.
