The Newlands pitch used for the second Test between South Africa and India has come under scrutiny from the International Cricket Council (ICC), receiving an “unsatisfactory” rating following their assessment of the wicket as part of the ICC Pitch and Outfield monitoring process.

Due to this assessment, the venue has been assigned one demerit point. Demerit points remain active for a rolling five-year period, and if a venue accumulates six demerit points, it faces suspension from hosting any international cricket for a period of 12 months.
The second Test, ultimately won by India, concluded within two days, with both teams grappling to make runs due to the unpredictable bounce of the ball. A total of 23 wickets fell on the opening day, with South Africa bowled out for a mere 55 runs, and India making 153, losing their last six wickets for no additional runs.
Captains Dean Elgar and Rohit Sharma expressed their dissatisfaction with the pitch to match referee Chris Broad. In his report, Broad highlighted that both skippers felt the pitch was below the expected standard.

“The pitch in Newlands was very difficult to bat on. The ball bounced quickly and sometimes alarmingly throughout the match, making it difficult to play shots. Several batters were hit on the gloves, and many wickets also fell due to the awkward bounce,” commented Broad.
The report has been forwarded to Cricket South Africa, allowing them a 14-day window to appeal against the sanction if they wish to contest the ICC’s assessment. The outcome of this evaluation sheds light on the ongoing challenges and discussions around pitch quality in international cricket.
