Rahul, along with Jasprit Bumrah, was expected to join the India squad in Rajkot on Monday. However, it has been reported that Rahul is still at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. His omission from the squad is primarily precautionary, following a right quadriceps injury that had sidelined him from the Visakhapatnam Test. Rahul had been included in the squad for the last three Tests, pending fitness clearance.
In Rahul’s absence, Devdutt Padikkal receives his maiden call-up to the Test squad. The 23-year-old Karnataka batsman has been in fine form in the ongoing first-class season, notably scoring 151 runs against Tamil Nadu recently. This innings marked his third century in the Ranji Trophy, adding to his impressive tally that includes a century against England Lions in the second unofficial Test.
With India opting to overlook the out-of-form Shreyas Iyer, as well as experienced campaigners Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, the team management will have a pool of fresh talents to choose from in Rajkot.
