Najmul Hossain Shanto Named All Formats Captain :
In a significant development for Bangladesh cricket, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed 25-year-old Najmul Hossain Shanto as the new captain for all three formats of the game. The decision was finalized during the BCB’s ninth Board of Directors Meeting held on Monday.
Additionally, the board announced former captain Gazi Ashraf Hossain as the chief selector and former international cricketer Hannan Sarkar as a selector. They have replaced Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar, respectively, in these roles.
Najmul Hossain Shanto showcased commendable leadership skills during Bangladesh’s series against New Zealand in late 2023. In the absence of regular captain Shakib Al Hasan and other senior players, Shanto led the team admirably in both ODIs and T20Is.
Under his captaincy, Bangladesh achieved their first-ever ODI victory over New Zealand, despite losing the series 2-1. Additionally, they drew the T20I series 1-1. Earlier, Shanto led Bangladesh to a historic 1-1 draw in the Test series against New Zealand at home, marking another milestone in his leadership tenure.
Although the overall win-loss record under his captaincy stands at three wins and seven losses in international matches, Shanto has earned praise for his proactive and composed leadership style, particularly during the New Zealand tour. It is noteworthy that in every match he has led so far, Bangladesh have not had their full-strength squad available.
Najmul Hossain Shanto’s appointment as the captain across all formats reflects the BCB’s confidence in his abilities and their commitment to nurturing young talent for the future of Bangladesh cricket.
