Lalchand Rajput, the former India international cricketer, has been appointed as the head coach of the senior UAE men’s team. The 62-year-old will be taking over from Mudassar Nazar, who had been serving as the interim head coach after succeeding another former India international, Robin Singh.

Lalchand Rajput brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously coached at the international level. He is notably remembered for guiding the Indian team to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup held in 2007. Following his success with India, Rajput went on to coach Afghanistan, playing a pivotal role in their attainment of Test status in 2017. His most recent coaching stint was with Zimbabwe, where he served as the head coach from 2018 to 2022.
With his extensive experience and proven track record in international cricket coaching, Lalchand Rajput is poised to make significant contributions to the development and success of the UAE men’s cricket team. His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for UAE cricket as they look forward to achieving greater heights under his leadership.
“UAE has emerged as one of the stronger Associate Members in recent years and the players have put in some good performances in both ODIs and T20Is,” Rajput was quoted as saying in an Emirates Cricket Board release. “The current batch is exceptionally talented and I look forward to working with them and further harnessing their cricket skills.”
In response to the appointment, Mubashir Usmani, the general secretary of the ECB, remarked…“We are confident that under his coaching UAE men’s cricket will flourish further. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Mudassar Nazar for his stellar work as the interim head coach. Mudassar will now return to his role as Head of the National Academy Programme where he will continue to identify and groom our future stars.”
Rajput’s initial task will be overseeing the ICC League 2 tri-series, which includes Canada and Scotland and commences on February 28. This competition serves as a pathway for teams to qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
