Shami’s absence is a notable setback for India as they aim to secure their first Test series victory in South Africa. With an impressive record of 229 wickets in just 64 Tests at an average of 27.71, Shami was the leading wicket-taker for the team during their last visit in 2021-22, claiming 14 wickets in three Tests at an average of 21. While no replacement has been named for Shami, India has a pool of five fast bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna, to choose from for the playing XI.

Ahead of the two Tests scheduled at Centurion and Cape Town as part of the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, India will engage in three ODIs against South Africa. Unfortunately, swing bowler Deepak Chahar will be absent from the squad due to a family emergency, with Bengal seamer Akash Deep named as his replacement.

In addition, middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer will participate in only the opening ODI in Johannesburg. He will miss the other two matches to take part in an intra-squad red-ball practice match ahead of the Test series.

Notably, India’s coaching staff, led by Rahul Dravid and supported by Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach), Vikram Rathour (batting coach), and T. Dilip (fielding coach), will not be involved in the ODI series. Instead, they will oversee the red-ball practice game and preparations for the Test series.

The ‘A’ team staff, including batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, bowling coach Rajib Datta, and fielding coach Ajay Ratra, will manage the ODI team during this period.
