According to the ICC Playing Conditions for the World Cup, the incoming batter has to “be ready to play the ball” within two minutes of a dismissal of a batsman and if a batsman is unable to play the in the said time limit than the umpire can give him “timed out”

In world cup cricket match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday (November 6), an unusual way to get “out” happened. Angelo Mathews, a Sri Lankan player, was dismissed from the game for being ‘timed out’. It was the first time this kind of dismissal had occurred in an international cricket match.

During the first innings of the game, in the 25th over, Mathews was getting ready to bat after Sadeera Samarawickrama , was dismissed. However, Mathews encountered a problem with his helmet strap, which got broke. He signaled to his team’s benched teammate for a new helmet, but he didn’t consult with the opposing team’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan. Consequently, Shakib successfully appealed for a ‘timed out’ decision from the on-field umpires.

According to the rules set by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the World Cup, a new batsman must be prepared to face the ball within two minutes time frame after the dismissal or retirement of the previous batsman. This rule has been in place for One Day International (ODI) cricket since June 2023. The time limits for Test matches are three minutes and for T-20 Internationals this time limit is 90 second .

The official scorers at the venue recorded that Samarawickrama was dismissed at 15:49 local time, while Mathews was timed out at 15:54 local time. Although Angelo Mathews entered the field at 15:50 local time, he wasn’t ready at the batting crease within the specified time frame that is 2 minutes.

Angelo Mathews tried to convince his case with the on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, but his efforts were in vain. As the Bangladesh team celebrated, Mathews left the field in frustration. He was seen showing the broken helmet to the team’s head coach, Chris Silverwood, before angrily throwing it and storming off toward the dressing room.

This incident marked the seventh occurrence of a ‘timed out‘ dismissal in men’s cricket and the first time it happened in a 50-over cricket match. The previous six instances had all taken place in first-class cricket.
