Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan – In a display of relentless bowling prowess, Sri Lanka seized control of the opening day’s play against Afghanistan at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Friday (February 2). Led by their latest Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva, Sri Lanka’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss was vindicated by the outstanding performances of their bowlers. Vishwa Fernando led the charge with figures of 4-51, supported admirably by Prabath Jayasuriya (3-67) and Asitha Fernando (3-24).

Despite a gritty innings from Rahmat Shah, who scored a solid 91 off 139 balls, Afghanistan struggled to build partnerships as none of his teammates provided substantial support. Rahmat’s innings was marked by composed strokeplay, rarely troubled by either pace or spin, but unfortunately, his efforts were not enough to lift his team to a competitive total.

The Afghan innings got off to a shaky start when Asitha Fernando trapped Ibrahim Zadran LBW off just the second ball of the match. Although skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah steadied the ship with a half-century stand, Vishwa Fernando’s dismissal of Shahidi triggered a collapse from which Afghanistan never recovered.

Prabath Jayasuriya’s left-arm spin further compounded Afghanistan’s woes, as he exploited the visitors’ vulnerability with some attacking bowling. Rahmat’s departure at 155 dealt a severe blow to Afghanistan’s hopes, and the remaining batters succumbed meekly to Sri Lanka’s relentless attack.

Sri Lanka’s opening pair, Dimuth Karunaratne and Nishan Madushka, then compounded Afghanistan’s misery with a solid unbroken stand. Karunaratne, in particular, showcased his aggressive intent by finding boundaries consistently, scoring at better than a run-a-ball rate. Madushka, while not as brisk as his partner, provided valuable support as Sri Lanka stamped their authority on the game.

With Sri Lanka firmly in control after the first day’s play, Afghanistan faces an uphill task to claw their way back into the match. The hosts will look to capitalize on their dominant position and build a substantial lead to put Afghanistan under further pressure in the remainder of the Test match.
