Smith is set to play in the first half of the Big Bash League (BBL), which kicks off as Australia’s home season starts on December 14. During this period, the Australian cricket team will be engaged in five Test matches against Pakistan and West Indies, concluding on January 29.

It’s worth mentioning that the BBL has adopted a new condensed schedule, running from December 7 to January 24.Currently, Smith is with the Australian squad in India, participating in a T20I series.

“It’s great to be back in the Sixers shirt. I’ve got some really fond memories playing for the Sixers. Obviously, I am an original, part of the first squad and really enjoyed my time last year for the five or six games and the finals that I played so I am keen to get out there again,” he said

The franchise captain, Moises Henriques, expressed his joy at having Steve Smith in the team, even if it’s only for a short period.

“Steve is a Sixer through and through. Any opportunity for him to be a part of this group, we will always jump at that chance. It goes without saying that he’s one of the best players the game has ever seen. He’s obviously someone you want playing in your side, but he’s also a guy we love having around,” Henriques stated.

Steve Smith is aiming to redefine his role as a T20I opener, motivated by his absence from the majority of Australia’s 2022 T20 World Cup campaign on home turf.

During the 2022-23 BBL season with the Sixers, Smith showcased his prowess as a T20I opening batter, amassing an impressive 346 runs in just five matches. His performance boasted an outstanding average of 86.50 and a striking strike rate of 174.74.

Smith’s power-hitting was evident through the considerable number of sixes he launched during his brief stint, and he even achieved the remarkable feat of scoring back-to-back centuries. This success has bolstered his case for a pivotal role in Australia’s T20I batting lineup. Looking ahead, the Sydney Sixers are set to kick off their 2023-24 campaign with a home clash against the Melbourne Renegades on December 8.
